VIENNA/LONDON | 2010 – the year of paysafecard group’s 10th anniversary – was the most successful year in the history of the company: compared to 2009, the number of transactions made with paysafecard vouchers went up by 40 percent. The staff increased to 145 employees whilst the group entered important new markets in North America and Europe. The group also widened their range of products.
35 million transactions were made with the group’s main product paysafecard. The prepaid voucher was predominantly used for paying for online games, virtual goods and Internet telephony.
Michael Mueller, CEO of paysafecard group, said: „With our product paysafecard, we have become Europe’s leading provider of online prepaid payment methods – especially in the online games sector. The general growth within the online games industry is still impressive, and especially gamers are looking for an easy, fast and secure payment method.”
In 2010, further online games added paysafecard to their payment options. Facebook Credits, the virtual currency for many games and applications on Facebook, can now be purchased with paysafecard vouchers. Two of the market leaders in the video game industry, Steam and Riot Games, also integrated paysafecard in their platforms. At Steam, online gamers can choose from 1,200 PC and Mac games. Riot Games publishes premium online games such as “League of Legends” which attracts more than 1 million players alone.
Expansion in North America
In 2010, paysafecard group entered the North American market with new subsidiaries in the US (paysafecard.com USA Inc.) and Mexico (paysafecard.com México S.A. de C.V.). Michael Mueller explained: “After launching paysafecard in Argentina in 2009, we have now entered North America. The demand for prepaid payment methods is very high in the US and Mexico. The biggest factor in the US is the massive boom of online games whilst the main reasons in Mexico are the low market penetration of credit cards and the increasing use of the Internet – which makes alternative payment methods particularly interesting.“
paysafecard group have grown rapidly since the start of their internationalisation in 2006. The product paysafecard is currently available at 300,000 outlets in 27 countries and can be used at 3,500 online shops.
Happy Schenkcard widens range of products
A new product was also introduced in 2010. The so called “Happy Schenkcard” is already the second prepaid MasterCard from paysafecard group which is available in Germany and Austria – after the launch of the “YUNA Card” in 2009.
“Happy Schenkcard“ is a prepaid credit card which is designed as a gift card. It is available in denominations of €25, €50, and €100. Unlike the YUNA Card, a “Happy Schenkcard“ cannot be topped up. Users can pay with their unique gift card wherever MasterCard is accepted.
