BELGIUM | Sixdots, the Belgian digital wallet, has partnered with Bancontact/Mister Cash to support Bancontact mobile payments via its Sixdots wallet. Sixdots refers to the six digit security code to unlock its wallet features, including person-to-person and online payments, couponing and loyalty.
Bancontact app payments
Since last month, customers of 16 Belgian banks – including BNP Paribas Fortis – can use the Bancontact app to make mobile payments (read full article here). The Bancontact app allows consumers to transfer money to friends and to pay in restaurants and shops and for their online purchases. Online merchants looking to accept Bancontact app payments should contact their Payment Service Provider to see if they can already support these type of mobile payments. Worldline - via their Sips Payment Gateway - and Ingenico Payment Services (formerly known as Ogone) are the first payment providers able to process these mobile BC/MC app transactions.
Belgian's Digital Wallet Sixdots
Sixdots, powered by MasterCard's MasterPass technology, was announced earlier in 2013 by BNP Paribas Fortis and Belgacom. Today all the other Belgian major banks as well as the key mobile network operators have joined the Sixdots initiative. Next to the virtual storage of any debit or credit card for mobile payments, the Sixdots wallet enables consumers to use digital coupons and participate in loyalty programmes. Merchants, both running physical and online shops, can benefit from these additional Sixdots features to engage with (potential) customers and provide payment convenience at the same time.
Sixdots and Bancontact
Now Bancontact/Mister Cash payments will be made possible through Sixdots, it is most likely to boost its adoption in the Belgian market. Bancontact/Mister Cash is Belgium's most popular payment method, both offline and online. Today, there are 15 million Bancontact/Mister Cash cards in circulation and 86% of all payments by electronic card are Bancontact/Mister Cash payments. The fact that the Sixdots wallet would be the all-in-one app supporting Bancontact, Maestro, MasterCard and Visa card payments and serving loyalty and couponing schemes, seems to be the ingredients for great success.
Any smartphone user with internet access and a Belgian bank card will be able to use Sixdots. People can already register on Sixdots.be to be kept up to date with Sixdots’ launch. Its official, commercial release is expected in the upcoming quarter.
