Airline Payments Platform Amadeus integrates UnionPay

MADRID - HONG KONG | Amadeus, the global payments platform for airlines, has added UnionPay to its processing platform. UnionPay, the largest card payment scheme in the world with over 4.3 billion cards, is now available for airlines for domestic and outbound Chinese tourism.

UnionPay International

Many people might mistakenly see UnionPay as the card scheme solely operating within Chinese borders. Less is true. UnionPay International, founded in 2012, as the subsidiary of China UnionPay is focused on the growth and support of UnionPay’s global business. It has already partnerships with over 300 organisations worldwide, enabled card acceptance in over 140 countries and issuing cards in more than 30 countries.

Last month, UnionPay International announced the partnership with 9 major Korean Payment Gateways thereby enabling all merchants processing through those gateways to accept UnionPay cards issued outside of Korea for ecommerce purchases. The nine Payment Gateways combined represent 60-70% of all Korean online payments traffic.

Amadeus Payment Platform

The Amadeus Payment platform is used by over 300 airlines worldwide and ensures all of its users to integrate payment authorisation  in the ticketing and selling process. APP enables Airlines and Travel Agencies to access more than 250 relevant acquiring banks and 100 alternative methods of payment worldwide.

The agreement between UnionPay and Amadeus covers the integration of UnionPay debit and credit cards into platform. It will allow Airlines and online travel agencies to offer payment with UnionPay cards across the aforementioned 140 countries.

"Global Reach to Cater to Chinese travelers"

Larry Wang, Chief Business Development Officer of UnionPay International, said “We are very pleased to have signed this agreement with Amadeus as we count on their travel IT expertise and global reach to cater to Chinese travelers, giving them the convenience of using their preferred payment card. I am confident that this initiative will further boost Chinese tourists’ outbound trips as they look to discover new destinations.”

Booming Chinese tourism market

Celia Pereiro, Head of Amadeus Travel Payments, said “The partnership with UnionPay cements our commitment to the booming Chinese tourism market and beyond. Not only will our travel providers have a quick and easy link to the immense base of UnionPay cardholders in China, but they can also rely on the APP’s robustness, speed and simplicity to process their payments."
