Toys (+28%), Music/Downloads (+27%) and Home & Interior (+23%) were the online segments with the strongest growth. The average transaction amount was $ 150 (-4% compared to 2011).

Online Commerce First Half 2013

For 2013 online sales is expected to slow down slightly (+8% compared to +9% for 2012). The first 6 months of 2013 resulted in an online consumer spend of around 6,7 billion USD (+8%).

Over 8.8 million shoppers purchased their goods and services online via desktop, tablet or smartphone. Main internet sectors remain Travel ($ 1.690M), Airline Tickets ($ 1.000M), Telecom
($ 925M) and Clothing ($ 530M).

Toys (+24%), Music/Downloads (+18%) and Computer Hardware (+17%) were the online segments with the strongest growth. The average transaction amount was $ 147 (-1% compared to 2012).

Mobile Commerce on the Rise

Based upon the Mobile Commerce Monitor for the first half of 2013 published by Blauw Research, the total mobile commerce accounted for 550 million euro turnover (755 million USD, +67%). The total amount spend via mobile and tablet is around 11% of the total ecommerce sales in the Netherlands (vs 6% last year).

In the first half of 2013 already 2.3 million people (+53%) bought online using a mobile device. Also the number of purchases and the average amount spend increased, respectively to 12 million (+56%) and 239 euro per mobile shopper (+9%).

Same as last year, clothing and shoes remain the most important segment for mobile shoppers (40%), followed by personal care products (22%), computer hardware (21%), music downloads (20%) and airline tickets (19%).

Smartphone vs Tablet

Already over 10 million Dutch people have a smartphone with internet subscription (private and business subscriptions probably). The Netherlands belongs to the top countries with the highest penetration rates in the world.

Next to the smartphone, and maybe an even bigger driver for mobile commerce, is the adoption and usage of tablets in Dutch households. A recent research by Telecompaper indicates that around 3 million households have already one or more tablets.

In 64% of all mobile purchases the tablet is the device of choice. 95% of all tablet purchases are done from home (vs 62% on smartphone).

Dutch #1 Online Payment Method

iDeal is the most preferred online payment method for the home shopping Dutchies. This Dutch bank-driven alternative payment method accounted for over 142 million transactions in 2013 (+22%). Back in 2006 only 4.5 million iDeal transactions were processed.

iDeal is basically just an online bank transfer from shopper to merchant. Upon iDEAL checkout, the online shopper is redirected to its trusted online banking environment where payment details and beneficiary are pre-filled. The shopper completes the bank transfer and uses the authentication procedure enforced by the bank. The purchase amount is instantly taken from the account and settled, normally within 1 working day, to the beneficial online merchant. 81% of the Dutch online shoppers have used iDeal and 54% prefer iDeal as online payment method.

For merchants there are many benefits that largely explain iDeal's success. Merchants appreciate the iDeal 'reach': 8 million Dutch people have online banking capability (Eurostats) and therefore can use iDeal. There is no chargeback mechanism and iDeal payments are guaranteed. Important to recognise as well is the fact that merchants benefit from fixed, relatively low fees per transaction and next day settlement. From many angles, it is an online payment method merchants can count on.

Websites aiming for Dutch online shoppers should definitely accept iDeal as payment method in their webshop.

iDeal in 2014

Last year again more foreign webshops aiming for the Dutch online shopper started to accept iDeal. iDEAL is now being used by merchants whose operations are based in 50 different countries. In Belgium, for example, iDEAL is accepted as a payment option in half of all webshops. It is expected that this trend will continue. iDeal is assumed to take away market share of MasterCard and Visa, who were traditionally better positioned for cross-border purchases.

Late 2013 two major Dutch Banks, ING and Rabobank, updated their online banking application to smoothen and simplify the checkout using iDeal on mobile devices. As mobile commerce is growing rapidly, Currence expects the number of mobile iDeal transactions definitely will increase. Taking into consideration that more non e-commerce businesses (sportclubs, insurance companies, energy suppliers and the like) also start using iDeal to collect membership and contribution fees, numbers will substantially rise.

About-Payments expects the number of iDeal transactions to grow with another 20-25% and to exceed 172 million payments in 2014.

MasterCard and Visa

MasterCard and VISA are the most frequently used credit cards for online purchases in the Netherlands. American Express comes in third place. More than 6 million credit cards are issued and approximately 70% is MasterCard branded. 6-7% of all internet payments in the Netherlands are performed with credit card. All banks support MasterCard SecureCode and Verified by Visa and the majority of online merchants have implemented 3D-secure as well.

The Digital Wallet products by MasterCard and Visa, respectively MasterPass and V.me by Visa are expected to be launched in 2014. Worldline (by Atos), the #1 commercial acquirer in Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, and payment service provider Ogone announced they will support MasterPass by the end of 2013, early 2014.

PayPal

The number of PayPal accounts in the Netherlands is estimated around 3 million. PayPal enables smaller merchants to accept the major credit cards MasterCard and Visa without the need to contract an acquirer (bank or financial institution) and integrate with a payment provider.

The larger online players often accept PayPal as a payment method next to iDeal, MasterCard, VISA and one or more Pay After Delivery payment methods like Acceptgiro, Klarna or AfterPay. It is then all about giving choice to their shoppers and optimise conversion rates.

Compared to all the other payment methods, and especially for smaller web shops, the costs per transactions are quite high and chargeback risks on credit card payments remain. On the other hand, due to PayPal’s focus on mobile checkout, merchants can benefit from higher conversion rates for purchases conducted on smartphone and tablet. The recent updates by Rabobank and ING Bank on Mobile iDeal, the expected launch of MasterCard’s and Visa’s own online wallets for seamless mobile checkout experiences could impact their market share.

Klarna and AfterPay

Growing numbers of Dutch e-shoppers prefer to shop online and pay after delivery of the goods using alternative payment methods like Klarna and AfterPay. Both payment methods take over the risk of non-payment and fraud entirely and guarantee the online retailer of payment.

Research shows that consumers, whether new or familiarised to online shopping, appreciate the fact that they can pay after delivery which gives them confidence to spend online. Next to ease-of-mind, these Pay-After-Delivery methods drive conversion rates for mobile checkouts. Consumers can complete their mobile purchase without the need to enter credit card details or use a 3D Secure password or one-time codes. These are all assumed to negatively impact conversion rates.

Klarna and AfterPay are competing for marketshare in the Netherlands. However, both methods are expected to grow volumes as the Dutch ecommerce market itself increases, more and more shoppers prefer to pay after delivery and mobile commerce is getting traction.

DUTCH Associations and Industry Bodies

Below you can find a short description of Dutch ecommerce industry related bodies or websites that might be useful for your online business.

Thuiswinkel.org

Thuiswinkel.org is the Dutch home shopping association looking after the interest of businesses that are selling products and services remotely by means of internet and phone to Dutch consumers.

Merchants can become a Thuiswinkel.org member and obtain their Thuiswinkel.org quality label called the 'Thuiswinkel Waarborg'. Merchants therefore need to comply to specific consumer protection rules as laid down in Thuiswinkel.org certification criteria, before they actually receive their quality label.

This quality label is well-recognised by Dutch consumers and provides trust. If they see the label on the merchant website it provides confidence that they are dealing with a reliable webshop and gives them confidence to spend online.

Thuiswinkel.org represents her members on a national and international level, aims to promote consumers' trust in ecommerce and to ensure knowledge and specific industry information is shared among members and business partners.

Currence facilitates a competitive market and transparency while preserving and continuing to develop the quality, security and efficiency of the uniform payment products.

Currence does that by creating a clearly defined level playing field in which all parties wishing to use the Currence payment products like Acceptgiro, Incasso/Machtigen and iDEAL, are able to operate. With clear rules and regulations relating to product use and the product environment plus transparent supervision of compliance, Currence creates the same conditions for all players.
