GBIC, the German Banking Industry Committee governs the Girocard payment network. Early 2015 they announced that the Girocard - a well-known debit card brand in Germany - will be made available to pay for online purchases. As tthe girocard is a debit card and directly linked to the bank account of the consumer, strict authentication will be required (through means of a CAPreader + PIN, SmartTAN codes or username/password).
