Bancontact/MisterCash acquirerEMS holds acquiring licenses for all major debit and credit cards and expands its brand range with popular cards to offer further acceptance capabilities to its customers throughout Europe. In 2014, EMS added Bancontact/Mister Cash for Point of Sale and e-commerce to its portfolio. EMS already supports the MasterCard, Visa, Maestro, V PAY, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and UnionPay card brands for payment processing.
Until recently Worldline was the only acquirer capable of processing Bancontact/Mister Cash payments for both brick-and-mortar and e-commerce shops. Back in September 2014, payment processor SIX and BNP Paribas opened up this monopoly. Now EMS has become the third Bancontact/Mister Cash acquirer to be able to process BC/MC card payments.
EMS is in the process of enabling other Payment Service Providers - which are connected to their acquiring platform - to start offering Bancontact/MisterCash acceptance to their merchant clients as well.
About Bancontact / Mister Cash
Bancontact / Mister Cash is the domestic debit card scheme in Belgium, allowing consumers to pay in real-time and guaranteeing payment to (online) merchants and businesses. Bancontact payments are immediately debited from the consumer's bank account and the seller's account will be credited the next working day.
Today, there are more Bancontact/Mister Cash cards in circulation (15 million) than there are Belgian citizens (10.5 million). 94% of all Belgium people are in the possession of Bancontact/Mister Cash debit card, so for any e-commerce merchant or business active in the Belgium market it is a must have online payment method to provide convenience at checkout and to achieve high conversion rates.
Bancontact / MisterCash e-commerce payments
In 2014, almost 21 million Bancontact/Mister Cash payments were processed on behalf of e-commerce retailers (in total 1.2 billion BC/MC transactions were processed). According to the Bancontact/Mister Cash website, BC/MC is the market leader in online payments, by representing 32% of all e-commerce payments in Belgium in 2014. Bancontact is followed by Visa (30%), MasterCard (20%) and other online payment methods including web banking, PayPal, American Express and online Maestro (17% combined).
